Crossroads Pop Up Restaurant

On Sunday evening, CJ and I had the pleasure of attending the first Crossroads Pop Up Restaurant, a farm-to-table event featuring a six course tasting menu inspired by the story of "The Three Little Pigs". Using locally sourced produce and humanely treated animals, Chefs Alex Villeneuve and Michel Nasrabadi put together a series of entrées cooked with straw, wood, and brick. There were two seating times (4:30 PM and 7:00 PM) with tickets priced at $55 per person available for purchase through YEGlive

The Crossroads pop-up dinner was held at The Mercury Room, a space which doubles as a music/performance venue and a vegan restaurant/bar. I had never been to The Mercury Room before, so I was a little sad to see there weren't any windows to allow for natural lighting for my food photos. Apart from that, I thought the ambiance of the room was great. There were about 26 guests at the 4:30 PM seating time with each seating time having a maximum of 30 guests.

It's been awhile since CJ and I had a candlelit dinner together, so I really enjoyed how the table set-up made the mood more romantic and intimate. A menu was provided at every seat so guests could follow along throughout the six course meal. 

Icebreaker.

To start off the evening, we were given an Icebreaker. When I first read this on the menu, I thought it was just going to be a drink that was meant to start conversation amongst the guests. But it was more than that. It was, quite literally, an ice breaker. Sitting on top of regular ice cubes was a hand blown isomalt sphere, meant to be tapped open using a spoon. The sphere, now broken into pieces, melds with the rest of the drink comprised of fizz and simple syrup. At first this drink tasted like diluted candy, perhaps a bit watery because of all the ice. However, as I continued to drink, I could taste more fruity and sweeter notes. CJ and I really liked the concept behind this drink and the double meaning behind its name.

Time for food! The first dish we received was a baby crimini and button mushroom tortellini in a traditional white wine and cream sauce. Aged parmesan, Italian summer truffles, and locally grown pea shoots were used to garnish the dish. Each piece was quite small, but was very flavourful with a little bit of spice. I loved how the mushroom tortellini paired so well with the cheese. I also gave pea shoots a try for the first time, which was a pretty neat experience. So far, off to a very good start!

I was immediately impressed by the presentation and colours on the plate when the first little pig arrived. Circling the straw cooked genesis pork tenderloin and sauce were beautiful orange ribbons of locally grown carrots. I liked how the carrots resembled straw in my eyes so that really added on to the story of this dish. A deep purple edible flower and nasturtium leaf were also used as garnish. I started with the carrots which were surprisingly enjoyable - dry at first but rehydrated in my mouth which gave a subtle sweetness. My pork tenderloin was a bit dry but CJ found his to be tender and juicy, so I found myself wishing for more of the BC nectarine and wild horseradish sauce. Lastly, the nasturtium leaf had a strong peppery taste (too strong for my liking) so the contrasting perfume-y and delicate taste of the flower was more up my alley.

Second Little Pig.

The second little pig featured apple wood smoked Boston shoulder which was thinly sliced and tender with a lovely smoky and slightly spicy taste. It was even more delicious paired with the walnut and pomegranate (or Fesenjan) sauce. The otherwise ordinary baby arugula was made excellent with the smoked cheddar and blueberries. I only wish there was more of the cheese! The two chips in the salad gave a satisfying crunch, adding some texture to the dish. The BC cherries were an interesting surprise - biting into the cherry, I quickly got a hit of booze! It's been a long time since I've had alcohol so the taste of the bourbon cherries wasn't really for me. Nevertheless, I thought this dish was well executed and full of comforting flavours.

The third little pig and the last entrée dish of the night was also beautifully presented with an edible leaf and flower as garnish. The cured local pork belly was brick cooked (maybe even brick shaped hehe) and served with a veal peppercorn sauce. I thought the pork belly was flavourful with a good ratio of meat to fat, while the sauce was hearty and delicious. The purple yam mash was a pleasant and mildly sweet starch that CJ and I both loved. The buttered local carrot snap peas on the plate was pretty neat: the carrots were prepared using molecular gastronomy and made into spheres inside the peas. A really fascinating technique, but I felt that the peas definitely overpowered the taste of the carrots - in fact, I'm sad to say that I didn't taste carrots in my bite at all (I wish I had tried the carrots on its own!). Other than the buttered carrot peas, everything on this plate was very tasty.

Creme Anglaise.

For dessert, we were given two flavours of creme anglaise ice cream spheres: lactose free coconut mango (with an edible flower garnish) and rock salted caramel. The coconut mango was fruity and not too sweet with a smooth, creamy texture. CJ and I absolutely loved the salty sweet flavour of the salted caramel ice cream, even though it melted faster than the coconut mango. Unsurprisingly, CJ now wants to create his own ice cream using rock salt!

The final dish of the night were these gorgeous handmade French macarons filled with local Evans cherry jam. The macaron shell was perfectly crispy on the outside but moist and slightly chewy inside. The cherry jam tasted amazing and I adored its bright red colour. Underneath the macarons was dehydrated peanut butter and nutella powder with a soft and fluffy texture which rehydrated in my mouth and tasted exactly like peanut butter and nutella! So cool and very innovative! CJ and I were quite curious to learn how it was made and were really excited when Chef Michel explained the process to us. What a wonderful way to conclude the evening! 

After the dinner, Chef Alex and Chef Michel went around speaking to all the guests. CJ and I had such an amazing experience and I'm really looking forward to seeing what these two up and coming chefs will bring to the Edmonton food scene in the future. I thought the menu was very innovative and successfully showed how (food) science and art can come together to create something delicious and unforgettable. You could tell that a lot of passion and hard work went into every dish. Well worth the $55. 

I think pop-ups are a great way for new businesses to test their ideas and see what works and what doesn't. I felt there were only a few very small downsides throughout the dinner, but other than those I thought everything tasted phenomenal overall. My favourite dishes? The second little pig and definitely the handmade macarons! CJ's favourites? The third little pig and the macarons as well! The service at The Mercury Room (Instagram: @mercuryroomyeg and Twitter: @mercuryroomyeg) was also excellent - the servers were friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about each dish. The evening flowed really well and each dish was served in a timely and orderly fashion. Bar Bricco

Last weekend, my friends and I had a celebration for all the June birthdays in our group. We decided to check out Bar Bricco (10347 Jasper Avenue), an Italian wine and spuntini bar owned by the acclaimed Chef Daniel Costa. Located in between his hugely popular modern Italian restaurant Corso 32 and the future home of a currently unnamed 80 seat trattoria, Bar Bricco is the place to wind down with a light snack and a glass of wine.

I have never been to Corso 32 yet, but I am aware of the need to reserve well in advance if you want to dine there. Contrasting this, Bar Bricco does not take reservations which suggests a more casual atmosphere.

Bar Bricco has a fairly small space (smaller than what I had expected), with only three tables that seat four people each and a long, wooden bar for about 15-18 people. CJ and I arrived when they opened at 5 PM, so we ended up grabbing seats at the bar with the window behind us while waiting for our friends. 

In the meantime, I got a chance to admire the interior. The sleek octagonal tile which curve from the ceiling to the floor make the space appear modern and intimate. If I had to describe Bar Bricco with one word it would be minimalist, highlighted by its small space, small menu, and as you will see, small plates.

Our group decided to order our own dishes and then share one of Bar Bricco's tasting plates. The first to arrive was June's pick: Fonduta Agnolotti Dal Plin with Sage Butter and Parmigiano ($16). The small ravioli are pinched to form its rectangular shape. To eat it simply pick one up, dip in the sage butter, and then the Parmigiano. I didn't try one, but I can imagine these to be a nice, light bite and super fun to eat. This plate also appears to be great for sharing!

I've heard many wonderful things about Bar Bricco's Egg Yolk Raviolo ($15), so I knew this snack had to be my pick for the evening. Enclosed in the pasta is a rich and creamy ricotta and a beautiful egg yolk that softly oozes out the moment you cut into it. Paired with sage leaves, brown butter, and grated Parmigiano cheese, I seriously can't get over how amazing this pasta dish tasted. The only problem with the raviolo is that I wish there was more... it was that good.

CJ's pick came from one of the many options listed in the Salumi (cured meats) section of the menu. He ended up going with the Culatello "Heart of the Prosciutto" ($13) which is served with grissini breadsticks, house-made focaccia, and warm bread. The word culatello translates to "little backside", which comes from the fact that the meat is made from the muscle mass in the back leg of the pig. The culatello CJ received was aged for 1 year and imported from Emilia Romagna. CJ enjoyed the thin slices of culatello paired with the crisp bread, which he found to be surprisingly filling. I also had a lot of fun with the grissini breadsticks, which I thought was simply decoration when I first saw it. These crisp, dry breadsticks had CJ thinking of Pocky but without the chocolate. 

Grilled Cheese.

Our server told us that they had one additional offering that wasn't on their menu, and that was their Grilled Cheese ($15). Unfortunately I don't remember the specific components of this dish, but Hamna decided to try it. She liked the extent to which the bread was toasted, but wished there was more cheese in it. There was also an added sweetness and richness with each bite. Personally, Hamna didn't care for this dish but others may find it more enjoyable! 

Rye & Speck Crostini, Ricotta, Cabbage, & Pink Lady Apple.

The last dish to arrive was Jeline's: Rye & Speck Crostini with Ricotta, Cabbage, and Pink Lady Apple ($15). On top of each crostini piece (4 served in total) is a spread of ricotta cheese topped with Speck (smoked prosciutto) and a refreshing mix of cabbage and apple. Jeline noted a good balance of sour from the dressing and a creaminess from the ricotta. Overall, a tasty dish.

A group of 5 people calls for one of Bar Bricco's tasting plates which are perfect for sharing. Our group decided to try the Formaggi Tasting Plate ($28) which comes with 5 different cheeses, grissini breadsticks, focaccia, warm bread, and two condiments. Moving clockwise starting from the 12 o'clock position in my second picture of the cheeses, we received Pecorino Toscano Fresco Aged 3 Months, Black Truffle Moliterno Aged 18 Months, Pecorino Toscano Stagionato Aged 6 Months, Taleggio, and finally Ricotta cheese in the centre. Please correct me if I am wrong about the cheeses - this is only from my memory! 

I really enjoyed trying the cheeses with different combinations of condiments and bread. Each cheese had its own unique taste and sharpness, but I think my personal favourite was the Pecorino Toscano Fresco which was one of the more mild options on the platter. CJ's favourite? The strong, earthy taste of the Black Truffle Moliterno, which is made by infusing a black truffle paste after the moliterno has aged. The truffle and black pepper honey added a nice sweetness to the bread and cheese, and the pear marmelatta was an equally delicious condiment as well. Overall, this tasting plate was excellent and quite filling. I recommend getting this or the Salumi Tasting Plate (which I want to try next!) if you're visiting Bar Bricco with a group of friends.

Overall, I would say that my experience at Bar Bricco was pretty awesome. The food I tried tasted absolutely delicious, especially the Egg Yolk Raviolo. Our server/bartender was also really knowledgeable about the menu and wine pairings. I guess one of the few downsides is that the room can get a little loud, and parties consisting of more than 4 people will end up sitting at the bar (since the tables only seat 4) which make it difficult to have good conversation with the entire group. Personally, I felt a bit uncomfortable with a whole row of people at the bar looking at me whenever I snapped a food photo (lol).

Thank you Chef Daniel Costa and your team at Bar Bricco for the wonderful experience! Now I'm even more excited to try out Corso 32 one day. Bar Bricco was voted the best place in Edmonton for small plates and ranked 2nd in best new restaurants in Avenue Edmonton's Best Restaurants 2015 issue - and they definitely deserve these rankings! Hang your belongings on the hooks underneath the bar, kick back with some small bites and a glass of wine from the extensive wine menu, and make some good conversation with your loved ones. Bar Bricco is open Tuesday to Saturday starting from 5 PM - I recommend dropping by early to grab a seat (especially if you're with a group) as the room does fill up fairly quickly. It is also quite easy to get to Bar Bricco by public transportation... just get off the LRT at Bay/Enterprise Square station and take the 104 Street exit south of Jasper Ave. Check out Bar Bricco on Facebook and follow them on Twitter (@BarBricco)!

Stories Behind the Chopsticks Inaugural YEG Food Crawl - May 30, 2015 Part Two

This blog post is Part Two of my recap of the Chinatown YEG Food Crawl. Don't forget to read Part One of my recap by clicking here if you haven't already!

After our meal at Zen Sushi, we headed over to our next stop of the food crawl... Golden Szechuan Restaurant (10508 101 Street)! This restaurant was next just door to Zen Sushi, making for a super short walk.

I've never had Szechuan cuisine before, so I thought I'd do a little research. Szechuan, or Sichuan, is a province located in southwest China. Cuisine in this region is characterized by its bold, spicy flavours. One of the signature ingredients used is the Szechuan peppercorn, a fragrant and numbing spice with slightly citrus overtones. Other common ingredients include ginger, spicy herbs, and chilis which were introduced later on in China's history from South America. Typical preparation techniques include stir frying, steaming, and braising.

Each participant of the food crawl was given their own plate featuring smaller versions of food served at Golden Szechuan. We were served these dishes very quickly (just a few minutes after we sat down), so everyone got to dig in right away. Yay for speedy service! Freya went around to each table to explain what was on our plate and that the level of spiciness in the food was toned down to be more mild and enjoyable for us. I started with the shredded pork with Szechuan sauce, which was mildly spicy and had a distinct sweetness to it. The thinly sliced beef tendon was tender and the sauce it was dipped in was bold and a bit spicier compared to the pork. Last but not least... the boiled sliced fish in hot sauce. I hadn't even gotten to this part of the meal yet when CJ started coughing beside me, reaching for his glass of water while commenting how the fish was so spicy. Thanks for making me scared to try the fish lol! Eventually, I was brave enough to try it... the fish itself was soft and the sauce was indeed hot and spicy, perhaps even a little numbing but still delicious. Later on, a server went to our table and told us that the type of food served at Golden Szechuan is traditional with authentic Szechuan flavours. I really enjoyed everything on my plate because each food item had its own complexity and level of fieriness. 

I also got a chance to meet and chat with Sharon Yeo, the blogger behind one of my favourite Edmonton-based food blogs titled Only Here for the Food. Sharon was helping co-guide the tour with Freya during Saturday's food crawl. It was so nice to meet you! 

Now onto our next destination! There was initially going to be only 4 stops on the food crawl, but one more stop was added in between Golden Szechuan and our last location of the day. Our group walked over to Ruby's Bakery (10642 98 Street), which was approximately 5 minutes away from Golden Szechuan Restaurant.

Stepping inside Ruby's Bakery, we were greeted by a warm, sweet smell of baked goods. Our large group managed to squeeze inside to listen to Ruby's story about her bakery. Ruby's Bakery has been in Chinatown since 2011, but she previously had a location in West Edmonton Mall. Ruby specializes in Hong Kong style birthday cakes and wedding cakes but also sells buns, cookies, tarts, and more! Custom cake orders usually take her 1-2 days to complete. We also got to see a few pictures of cakes she's made in the past, including a cake with a peach design on it. We were told that in some Asian cultures, peach-shaped cakes or cakes with a peach decoration are given to seniors on their birthday because the fruit symbolizes longevity and good life. Neat!

Shortly after, each of us were given a box from Ruby containing two desserts: a coconut tart and a tulip cake. I reached for the coconut tart first, which was a nice golden brown on top and a warm yellow colour inside. I don't really go for tarts whenever I want a sweet treat, but my first bite into this tart was amazing! Each bite was soft, fluffy, and a little crumbly. Not too sweet at all. I'm already craving more of this buttery pastry as I write this! Afterwards I tried the tulip cake. This cake was light and airy with a sponge-like texture. Also super tasty! This treat didn't taste too sweet or sugary either, so I wouldn't feel guilty eating tons of it all day along with the coconut tart. I would definitely return to Ruby's Bakery for more of these desserts! 

Finally, our fifth and final stop of the Chinatown YEG Food Crawl: Tea Bar Cafe (10640 98 Street)! Located right next door to Ruby's Bakery, our group headed here for bubble tea to conclude the crawl.

While we were still in Golden Szechuan Restaurant, Freya wrote down what bubble tea drink each person wanted so that the drinks would be ready by the time we arrived at Tea Bar Cafe. Everyone headed towards the back of the cafe to sit down and talk with other food enthusiasts, all while sipping on our bubble tea. I went with taro, while CJ went with mango. The drink was nice and cold and tasted exactly like how it should be. The crawl was finished around 4:30 PM, just half an hour past the scheduled 4:00 PM ending time. Before everyone went their separate ways, we all completed a feedback survey of our experience of the crawl.

Personally, I thought the Chinatown YEG Food Crawl was a wonderful learning opportunity for me: I got to learn more about the neighbourhood and try new cuisine that I probably would not have considered trying on my own time. I also want to try more food places in Chinatown now, a neighbourhood that previously I would not even consider travelling to. One of the best parts of the food crawl was that at each restaurant we visited, CJ and I sat with different people every time. Both CJ and I are usually kept to ourselves when we're around people we don't know well, but it was easy to chat with other people at this event because of a common love for delicious food. Also, when you're with other food lovers, everyone just seems to understand the idea of taking pictures of your food before eating it. To all the food lovers who sat beside or across from CJ and I, thanks for making our food crawl experience more enjoyable!

For $35 per person, I would say this event was totally worth it. We got to try so much food - way more than I had expected! Gratuities were not included in the cost but luckily I brought some cash with me to tip the servers for all their hard work. I would love to visit the restaurants and food businesses from the crawl sometime in the future. Lots of good conversation was made during the event as well. I'm looking forward to future YEG Food Crawls... I wonder which neighbourhood will be next? Stories Behind the Chopsticks Inaugural YEG Food Crawl - May 30, 2015 Part One

Last month, while browsing through social media, I learned about an upcoming food crawl event in Chinatown. I've heard about pub crawls, which involves a group of people drinking in multiple pubs or bars in a single night, often travelling either by foot or bus. I've never participated in a pub crawl, but I would totally choose a food crawl over it! The first tour of the Stories Behind the Chopsticks YEG Food Crawl event took place yesterday, the last Saturday of May. The second tour of the event happened just this afternoon!

The inaugural YEG Food Crawl event, presented by McCauley Revitalization, aims to provide exposure to the restaurants in the neighbourhood while showcasing Chinatown as a safe area in an effort to challenge its negative stereotypes. Specifically, the event is a 3 hour long staggered eating process where participants eat pre-determined meals at 4 restaurants or food businesses in Chinatown for about 30 to 45 minutes at each location. The cost per person was $35. You don't find out which restaurants you're going to or what food you're going to eat until a few days before the event, which makes for a nice surprise. 

I don't really find myself heading to Chinatown for food, mostly because it always seemed hard to get to since I usually travel by bus or LRT whenever my destination is in Downtown. Yesterday, however, I learned that it's actually quite easy to get to the neighbourhood by bus if you're travelling from south of the river. This was great news for me because now I have more food places to choose from! CJ and I headed over to the first stop of the food crawl... Lee House (10704 97 Street)!

A few months ago, Lee House opened a new location on 97 Street in Chinatown, right across from Lucky 97 Supermarket. Lee House has always been a place I wanted to try, and since being voted the best Korean restaurant of 2015 in Edmonton by Avenue Edmonton magazine, the need to visit was reinforced even more. That's why I was so excited to find out that Lee House was one of the stops on Saturday's food crawl!

Before we started eating, Freya Fu - the coordinator of this event - gave an introduction about Chinatown and its history. In the 1960's and 70's, many people from China and other south east Asian countries came to Edmonton to study at the University of Alberta. Eventually, they chose to reside in the Chinatown area and opened up businesses there. A few years later, the Canadian government began to accept more refugees from Asian countries which helped to increase the diversity and population of Edmonton's Chinatown. Today, you'll find that Chinatown is made up of two areas: 97 Street, which is the business and retail zone, and 102 A Avenue, where the multicultural centre is found and where many societies, organizations, and associations have their head offices.

We got to try a lot of dishes at Lee House, including their Beef Bulgogi, famous Chicken Balls, and Sweet Potato Sticky Noodles. Kimchi, daikon squares, rice, and a mung bean sprout sesame salad were also served to accompany our meal. Phil, one of the owners of the restaurant, explained that Korean food is one of the healthiest out of all Asian cuisine since no MSG is added and very little oil is used. Everything tasted amazing! My favourite dish was the Sweet Potato Sticky Noodles, or Jab Chae Bokeum. I loved the chewy noodles with the sweet soy mushroom sauce - it was delicious and something new and different for me. The chicken balls were also great and not too greasy, although I felt the exterior was a little tough to chew. Finally, the beef bulgogi was one of the best I've tried in the city! So flavourful.

When we were about half way done with our food, Mrs. Lee and her son Phil shared their story behind Lee House and the food they create and serve. Phil shared that every morning, before Lee House opens, Mrs. Lee can be found shopping at Lucky 97 Supermarket across the street to buy everything she needs to create the food served at her restaurant. Additionally, some of the ingredients used are shipped directly by relatives from their home town in Korea, resulting in distinct flavours that you won't find at any other Korean restaurant in Edmonton. Such a lovely story! I think it is amazing how Mrs. Lee creates everything herself - definitely something to be proud of!

After 45 minutes of eating (beginning at 1:00 PM) at Lee House, we headed outside where we learned about the statue situated in front of Lucky 97 Supermarket. I really liked how along with stories about the restaurants we visited and the food we ate, we were also able to learn about a landmark in Chinatown. Afterwards, our group of about 25 food lovers headed to our next destination: Zen Sushi (10518 101 Street)! Located on 101 Street, it was about a 5 minute walk from Lee House.

Shortly after being seated, each table got a piece of paper where we had to select the food items we wanted from 5 courses: sushi, maki, salad, tempura, and a main dish. It was a little confusing at first, but with help from other people we were able to figure out how to order!

To kick off our meal, we were given a bowl of miso soup - always a great way to start in my opinion. Next to arrive was our teriyaki chicken and CJ's teriyaki beef (not pictured). The tender and flavourful teriyaki chicken was a hit at our table... in fact, CJ wished he had ordered the chicken instead of the beef! CJ and I, along with the two lovely ladies sitting across from us, also really liked the shrimp tempura which we found was lightly crispy and delicious. Each one of us also got to choose our own sushi, with avocado sushi being my pick. These sushi pieces looked so cute! My sushi was a nice bite because of the perfect creaminess of the avocado.

So. Much. Food!!! When we were given our maki and salads, we already had quite a stack of small plates at our table. I ordered the spicy tuna maki, but it wasn't my favourite. The texture of the tuna seemed a little weird and mushy to me, so I gave my remaining pieces to CJ who didn't seem to mind. For the salad course, I went with their bean sprout salad. This salad was very refreshing and made for a nice palate cleanser. I also got to try edamame for the first time! I had no idea how to eat the edamame until a lady sitting at the table beside us explained how: don't eat the pod, just eat the beans inside which easily pop out *cue my brief moment of fascination*. The edamame pod was lightly salted, and the beans were soft and something I wouldn't mind eating for a snack. 

My dining experience at Zen Sushi was great overall, although it was a little uncoordinated. Some food items were delayed at arriving to their respective tables, but I would say it was forgiveable and not a huge issue since we were such a large group.

Just a few minutes before it was time to leave, Henry Ma - the owner of Zen Sushi - shared his story about the restaurant. Zen Sushi has been open since 2006, and just last year Henry became the new manager of the restaurant that he actually named. He shares that because he grew up playing in the Chinatown area, he has always felt it to be a safe neighbourhood. Edmontonians often drive right past Chinatown, unaware of all the food businesses in the area. He comments that initiatives like the Chinatown YEG Food Crawl are a great way to try different specialty food items offered by the local restaurants.
